We made it to Karl’s house with time to spare and hid in the kitchen when Kuzma arrived. Karl invited him in and they sat in the living room.

“So, what is this about, Karl?” Kuzma asked. “You said it was important.”

That was the cue for Javi and I to make our entrance, and he was obviously taken by surprise.

“What are you doing here?” He stood and glared at us before turning to Karl. “Why did you allow these sinners into your house?”

“I can’t believe you’re a member of that ridiculous group. They picketed my brother’s funeral, for crying out loud.”

“We are God’s voice!” Kuzma bellowed.

Javi strode up to him and got in his face. “We have some questions for you.”

“I have no intention of speaking to any of you.” He tried to move past Javi, but his path remained blocked.

“All I want is a few minutes and you can go on your merry way.” I sat next to Karl and motioned for Kuzma to sit.

He scowled and remained standing until it became obvious that Javi wasn’t going to move.

“What do you want?” he snapped.

“What did you have against Ev?”

“My cousin was doing the devil’s work. He disgraced the family by trying to cure the plague.”

“You mean HIV?”

Kuzma nodded and pursed his lips. “God created the sickness to punish sinners. And Evgeny was a sinner. His work was shameful. Being a faggot made it even worse. I disowned my cousin the moment I learned he was a sodomite.”

“Did you know before his death?” I asked, leaning forward.

“It doesn’t matter when I found out—only that I did.”

“I disagree,” Javi said. “I think it does matter. Maybe you decided an honor killing was needed and decided to do the deed yourself?”

Kuzma was taken aback. “You think I killed Evgeny?”

“It seems like a distinct possibility,” I said.

“Did you kill my brother?” Karl bunched his fists together and appeared ready to leap across the coffee table and attack Kuzma.

“He deserved to die. He can no longer spread his filth. That outrageous work of his will not continue.”

“Are you confessing?” Javi asked.

Kuzma shook his head. “I am not sorry Evgeny is dead, but I did not kill him.”

Javi stared down at him. “Why should we believe you?”

Kuzma returned the gaze. “If I had done it, I would proudly admit it. It was a righteous kill and I would proudly tell the truth. God would protect me from man’s law, but I didn’t do it.”

I turned to Karl. “You know him better, do you think he’s telling the truth?”

He nodded. “There have been so-called honor killings in the religion. More in Russia than here, but it happens. The murderer usually takes credit because it can be seen as a positive action. I think Kuzma would be boasting if he was guilty.”

I agreed. The man was a bit spun and no doubt would’ve been proud if he’d done it.

“How did you find out Ev was gay?” I asked again.

“I don’t see how it matters, so I will tell you.
